Honoring Women Customers Who Cultivate Change

The United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer. To celebrate this recognition, we are spotlighting the vital role women play in agriculture.

At Bunge, the International Year of the Woman Farmer reflects what we see every day through our partnership with farmers around the world – women leading with resilience, strengthening their communities and driving agriculture forward.

Carmen (Nigh) Hawk is woman farmer and Bunge customer who is committed to the land, her community and the future of agriculture. Carmen’s story demonstrates the impact women have across agriculture and the vital role they play in shaping a more resilient and sustainable future.

Rooted in Family Tradition

As the co-owner and operator of her family’s sixth-generation farm, Nigh Heritage Farms in Shelbyville, Indiana, Carmen grows primarily corn and soybeans, with occasional wheat production. Growing up, she helped with everything from processing pigs and hauling grain, to learning to operate the combine from her grandfather. She later studied Ag Economics and Ag Business at Purdue University and worked at an ag co-op before returning to the family farm. Twelve years ago, her family relocated back to Shelbyville where she was welcomed back to the family business.

Earning Respect and Building Confidence

As she stepped back into the family operation, her father’s mentorship was invaluable, but she still faced challenges as a woman in a male-dominated field.
“The most significant challenge I have faced was gaining the professional respect of men in the industry,” Carmen said. “From day one, my father made it clear to sales and marketers that they needed to address me directly, as I was in charge.”

While it was intimidating to step into that role, Carmen said the experience helped build the confidence she carries today.

“I rely on my inner resilience and strategic thinking to overcome any barriers,” she said.

Throughout her journey, Carmen said support from industry partners, including Bunge, has helped reinforce that confidence. Nigh Heritage Farms’ relationship with Bunge dates back more than 50 years. The farm began working with Central Soya in the mid-1970s, and that partnership continued when Bunge acquired Central Soya, creating a trusted relationship that has spanned decades.

“Bunge has always provided a supportive environment throughout my career,” Carmen said. “I have consistently felt respected and valued by Bunge employees, who have encouraged me and helped me navigate the challenges of my journey as a female owner-operator.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

As she earned respect within the industry, she felt empowered to inspire other women pursuing careers in agriculture.

“I am most proud when fellow farmers or the same salesmen I met when I first returned to the farm tell me how much I encourage them by being a successful woman in agriculture,” she said. “Serving as a voice and inspiration for their daughters, and knowing they use me as an example that it can be done, is incredibly rewarding.”

Carmen is also a role model for her daughter, Abby, who plans to study agriculture at Purdue University and hopes to become the seventh generation to run Nigh Heritage Farms. The opportunity to help shape that future is what keeps Carmen motivated.

What Lies Ahead

Carmen’s focus on the future extends beyond her own family farm. She believes advances in technology and evolving agricultural practices are creating opportunities for women to succeed.

“I firmly believe that the future of farming will offer women the same opportunities as their male counterparts,” Carmen said. “My advice to young women entering this field is to follow your heart and lead and walk in confidence to pursue your dreams.”
